Member Spotlight: Jordon Millward

Meet Jordon Millward, a PhD student at Imperial College London, who is focused on understanding the life science students' professional trajectories and career intentions. His research aims to positively impact students' career paths, promoting a supportive environment for their professional growth.
A proactive and engaged student, Jordon has been involved in outreach and student engagement projects through different roles from a postgraduate research chair (former role) and student programme partner to a governor in a school. One of his greatest achievements has been contributing to career and mental health initiatives for the school’s science students and staff. Jordon is an enthusiast of alumni networks in which he has supported former and current students in their career development, and of social media such as Threads, Instagram and TikTok, as platforms for science outreach and discussion about academic career development and education.
His entrepreneurial characteristics and belief in research impact led him to open AskJordon Ltd in 2022, which offers consultancy and mentoring services around career journey, application revisions and project management for students and academics within science and education fields. Another key element of his business is to support academics in developing courses based on their research for a broad audience, improving outreach, accessibility and impact.
As impact is at the core of his work, Jordon together with his colleague Luke McCrone, secured a grant to organise this year’s SEB Outreach, Education and Diversity (OED) Symposium “Empowering Research for Community Impact”. The event's primary focus was to bridge the gap between research and the community, support research impact, and empower researchers and the public, showcasing how this impact can be facilitated by the researchers. Jordon and Luke also ran an OED “From classroom to community: applied frameworks in action” session at the SEB Annual Conference in Prague this year which reinforced their engagement and commitment to the SEB, the OED working group – which Jordon is an active member – and their beliefs.
Jordon’s efforts are also driven towards improving diversity and representation in the biosciences. He has been part of the SEB Awards Nomination Task Force and has just started a new podcast “Sitting Down with Scholars” to discuss different academic journeys. The SEB treasures Jordon’s work and engagement and invites more postgraduate students and early careers to springboard their careers disseminating their work, and engaging with our opportunities.
